Wednesday was a travel day for me. I was headed back to Northeast Texas and decided to do all of my traveling purchases in West. Not that that would be out of the ordinary, I usually stop off for kolaches, but after last month’s explosion, I wanted to see how the town is recovering.
Upon coming into town, I noticed a lot of disaster recovery stations, window repair trucks, and other associated contractors. Downtown West was very much alive with two H-E-B trailers outside the donation center and more contractors, DPS emergency management personnel, and State Fore Marshals parked up and down the downtown business district.
I took in lunch at the Czech-American Resturaunt on North Main Street. The daily special? The best sausage and sauerkraut I’ve ever had. The cafe was so busy that I had to find a seat at the “community” table where local laborers come and go as they take their breaks. One guy relayed a story about how his parents had lost their house but were fortunately uninjured.
West is a long way from normal. An although the businesses I visited were bustling an vibrant, they’ll need our help once the contractors and investigators leave town.
